Gulf South Ancestralization

Gulf South Ancestralization

We invite you to gather with us for a three-day Ritual of Ancestralization

Through this ritual,

we learn our stories,

we share our stories,

we remember what has been lost,

we reconnect with our Ancestors, our roots,

we deepen our understanding and our experience of being embodied in this moment on Earth,

and we come together to support one another in sacred community

to ground, to grieve, to heal, to sprout

and to flourish in our lives.

What is the Ritual of Ancestralization?

When Malidoma Some, an elder of the Dagara tribe, came to the West, he carried with him a medicine bundle of ancient traditional wisdom, and from that bundle he created a profound method for healing our ancestral pathways, which we call the Ritual of Ancestralization.

In Malidoma's home village of Dano, in the country of Burkina Faso, West Africa, when a person dies hundreds of villagers come together to support that one soul's crossing.  Village life halts in order to support this soul's journey to the Other Side, or the Ancestral Lands. For three days and three nights, there is drumming, chanting, singing, grieving, and the collective offering of energetic and sacred devotion needed to help a soul transition.

Coming together in community to support the soul's transition after death is an age old practice, yet in the West we have lost our connection to these ancient ways. Now we see modernity and traditional wisdom beginning to blend together to birth a more rounded human pathway forward. Malidoma adapted the wisdom of his ancestral traditions to accommodate the Western culture and so we embrace this Ritual of Ancestralization as an adapted ritual for these times. This sacred ceremony gives us opportunity to remember the importance of community ritual, and to delve deeply into the human waters that these essential rites activate and invoke.

Liv Wheeler, during the time of her training with Malidoma Some, trained in facilitating this ritual several times with him, and has now added her own adaptations to further harmonize it within our culture.

This ritual is a living event that we will activate and co-create together. Much of it cannot be planned. Once the seed is planted, once the participants have said “yes,” the ritual begins to take on its own form. We come together and allow it to flow, and through this, transformation comes.
