A Ritual Gathering with Liv Mokai Wheeler
Hot Springs, North Carolina · June 14-16, 2019
This morning while dancing, I entered into a trance so as to receive visions and guidance from the Kontomble about our ritual gathering near Asheville, NC. Their guidance was quite abundant! It became very clear that they would like us to gather as community to hear from Mother Nature; it seems that her majesty is waiting to speak with us. The Kontomble also spoke of the great importance of healing our voices and in so doing making way for our unique forms of expression.
What is it that we are not allowed to say? How does society sculpt us such that we believe that we must be a product of our environment or nothing at all?
I often notice that I feel less able to be myself when I am in places around the earth where nature is heavily manicured or doctored by the metal-of-man. I wonder, does everyone feel this? Conversely, there are places, most often in nature, where I feel I can indeed be myself. For example, if you’ve watched our film The Remembering, you’ve seen the scene where we dance in the wilds of Mongolia, in unaltered nature. And in some ways, the back story to this is simple to tell: we arrived there and immediately erupted in joy! I believe that nature en-joyed us. And we were blessed to experience the ecstasy of pristine nature.
Recently, the whales have been very vocal when I connect with the Otherworld. In fact, they have been alarmingly vocal. I hesitated to say this because I wondered if it would be too much for people to hear. However, I understand that it is important to say this nonetheless; the Kontomble show that we need to re-develop our capacity to rise as opposed to collapse in the face of a warning call from Mother Nature. And even as a modern people, it is completely possible for us to rise and reunite with nature in a friendly way. This is what we’re inspired to do at our ritual gathering: to show up to nature as friends. And so, we are very intentionally calling together heart-centered women, or those who identify in some way as female, to gather to hear from Mother Nature. What will she share with us? We don’t know.
The Kontomble remind us that nature is continually giving to us. It seems that her primary expression is giving; and to feel this all one needs is to go into nature and observe. As such, the Kontomble are adamant that it’s important for us to show up to this ritual gathering as beings ready to give and not as beings ready to take.
This gathering will be a circle that makes space for the most shy, for those whose hearts’ beat quickly at the mere thought of sharing in community. It will also be a circle for those who are aching to express grief and even rage; we’ll create a space such that this expression is not being aimed at anyone in the circle and yet can still be released. Emote we must, lest we continue banishing parts of our being until there’s nothing left. I will also share a mask ceremony that will ultimately make way for more of each of us to enter the circle. And we’ll gather at the sacred fire under the Milky Way to listen to Nature herself. She beckons us.
The Kontomble show that we will each receive healing through this process; they show that they are ready to offer healing to each of those who gather. What kind of healing, you may ask? It will be the kind that welcomes our closeted-selves into the circle. It will be the kind that reminds us that yes, we are welcome and yes, we need all aspects of our beings in the circle. It will be that kind of healing.
When I asked the Kontomble what they wanted to name this ritual retreat, I didn’t recognize what I could hear come through. And so, I literally gave them my hand and a pen to write it down. They wrote A - T - O - L - I: Atoli. I initially wondered if this was a new word. But then I looked it up only to find that the meaning is quite beautiful. It is a Japanese name that means “a gift from above.” And so it seems that we will gather to welcome and receive a gift from above. And so it is.
Liv Mokai Wheeler
Atoli is a ritual gathering that will be led and facilitated by Liv Mokai Wheeler and supported by Florencia Barolin. It is intended to be a safe space for the feminine to come together for a weekend-long ceremonial retreat to show up to nature as an ally while engaging in healing.
We will gather for community circles, ceremony, and ritual with Liv Mokai.
We will also have the opportunity to sit in ceremony and council with the Kontomble and to hear the messages of Mother Nature. As we will be communing with Spirit in this sacred dialogue, we will also be making offerings throughout the weekend so as to feed these relations and friendships with love and reciprocity.
Additionally, we will come together to engage in the energies of expression and expansion in an effort to welcome even the closeted aspects of our beings into the space and to embody the true fullness of our beings once more.
We will humbly bow our heads to Spirit and the Earth Mother alike as the gift from above is revealed to us.
We will gather at Wheel of Bliss Retreat Center in Hot Springs, North Carolina. This center is a sensitively cultivated and mindfully tended space nestled in the magical Blue Ridge Highlands. We’ve chosen this to be our home during the ritual gathering because of the warmth, the tranquility, the inherent privacy in rural mountains, and the pristine nature of the forest. This will be a safe place where we can emote and engage in ritual and healing with freedom while diving deeply into dialogue with the Otherworld and Mother Nature. It is a place and land where we can root into nature and into our true natures while being held during our process.
We will put a focus on natural, grounding foods made by loving hands so as to support our beings with true nourishment.
Sleeping arrangements will be assigned and we will each be sharing rooms or beds with another community member. Upon registration, you will be given the opportunity to express your preferences in how you’ll be assigned a space.
This is an open and safe space for all that identify in some way as feminine or female. It is not she/her exclusive and we welcome all expressions of what feminine means to you.
The Magic of Appalachia
The Blue Ridge Highlands are gentle, rolling mountains blanketed with dense, green forestry. They are a part of the Appalachian Mountain Range and thought to be part of some of the oldest mountains with the most preserved temperate forests in the world. They are a touchstone to the magic, beauty, and story of Mother Nature.
Wheel of Bliss is nestled within streams, waterfalls, and forests on 63 acres of land that meld into the national forestry. The founders tend to this sacred space for people to gather and grow on their spiritual path and they also tend to and protect the land as stewards of the earth. Liv Mokai Wheeler
Liv Mokai Wheeler is a Kontomble Voice Diviner, a voice for the "little people," and international ritual facilitator. She trained and apprenticed for 8 years with Malidoma Some (author, PhD, West African Shaman). During that time, she made many pilgrimages to Burkina Faso, West Africa. There she spent time in the villages with the medicine people and also reconnected with the Kontomble. She has gone through several initiations that have enabled her to speak in the tongue of the Kontomble.
Liv’s practice has been working with people individually as well as facilitating healing in community for 14 years. Her work has brought her both into national and the international communities where she facilitates group divination rituals. She tours the world facilitating ritual reminding people of their true nature, which is deeper than our modern selves would have us believe.
For the past few years, Liv has been working with friends and researchers to help uncover the stories and memories of the "little people" around the world. In 2018, in addition to publishing her first book, With the Love of the Ancients: My Spiritual Journey of Remembering, she also produced a feature-length documentary entitled The Remembering that released in January of 2019.
Florencia Barolin, LMT, is a medicine woman, healer, and body worker. Fifteen years ago she experienced a turning point that completely shifted her view of the world and of herself, revealing her gift and purpose, when she healed herself from cancer through a holistic approach. Since then she has dedicated her life to serving others and sharing the medicine she has harvested from her own personal deep work as well as from having studied with many great teachers.
Her healing work and approach with community is characterized by intuitive listening and a profound respect for each person’s innate wisdom to heal themselves while she guides as a sacred space holder in which deep emotional release, transformation, and healing takes place amidst unconditional love, kindness, and care. Flo will be joining us to help support the community and process and also aide in clearing energy and entities.
Sylvie is what she would call a student of life and Spirit with a love and reverence for movement, herbalism, Celtic folk tradition, and the beings of the Otherworld including the Fey and the Little People of the Earth. As a result of finding recovery from an eating disorder, she began to sense and connect with humanity and the worlds in a different way. She has since been on the path of rediscovering what it is to truly live, to feed life, and to deepen into a more authentic expression of what it means to her to walk with Spirit most deeply by studying with and supporting Liv. She is both excited and honored to be supporting the ritual gathering as gatekeeper for Liv and a being helping to hold the process and community before and during the gathering.
